Synopsis: "When you're on death row, minutes from the electric chair, and a hook-handed monk offers to save your life if you'll just swallow a simple little pill... what've you got to lose? You take the pill. Then you wake up, officially "dead," in the back of an ambulance, headed for an undisclosed location. Welcome to your new life, working for CURE, the most secret, most deniable, most extra-judicial government agency ever to exist. Only the President knows about it, and even he doesn't control it.
That's what happened to Remo Williams, a New Jersey cop framed for a murder he didn't commit. Framed by the very people who saved him, in fact. And now, trained in esoteric martial arts by Chiun, master of Sinanju, he's going to become the ultimate killing machine. Remo will be America's last line of defense against mad scientists, organized crime, ancient undead gods, and anything else that threatens the Constitution. Remo Williams is the Destroyer.
An action-adventure series leavened with social and political satire, the Destroyer novels have been thrilling readers worldwide for decades."
Back in the 1985 there was a favorite movie of mine that should have had several sequels. That movie was Remo William: The Adventure Begins. Decades later I learned that it was based on a book and that the series is well over 100 books long.
Created, The Destroyer is the first book in the series. While the movie and book differ slightly, the story is basically the same. A cop is transformed by a shadowy government agency to right the wrongs of evildoers through a Korean martial arts known as Sinanju, taught by the humorous Chiun.
Remo Williams is a cop framed for a murder he didn't commit in order to receive the death penalty so that he can work for CURE, a hush, hush agency created by President Kennedy to defend the country outside the law. As Williams learns more about his employers and begins training in Shianju he learns his purpose for the ruse and his role.
Created, The Destroyer was written in the late 60's and originally published in the early 70's and doesn't feel dated at all. There were one or two passages towards the end of the story that gave away its age but you had to really look for them in order to catch them. It was great to finally read the original source material for the movie and catching up with some favorite character from my past.
The Destroyer series is available for Kindle and each installment of the series is $2.99, which is a steal as the books are entertaining and quick to read. I devoured the first book in a few hours and while I haven't picked up any of the other books, I probably will in the future as I was thoroughly entertained as I strolled through memory lane. Highly recommended.
Overall 8/10
